What to look for

  • Wattage: Add up the CPU and graphics card power, then leave plenty of headroom. Your graphics card maker lists a recommended PSU size, and that's the best starting point.
  • 80 Plus rating: Bronze, Gold and Platinum show efficiency. Gold wastes less power as heat and is usually quieter than Bronze. Cybenetics is a similar, newer rating.
  • ATX 3.1 and 12V-2x6: Newer cards use the 12V-2x6 plug. An ATX 3.1 unit with a native cable avoids adapters.
  • Modular or wired: Fully modular units let you fit only the cables you need, which makes building tidier. Fully wired units are cheaper.
  • Brand and warranty: Stick to known brands and check the warranty length on the retailer page.

Questions people ask

What wattage PSU do I need?

Start with your graphics card maker's recommended PSU size, then leave some headroom for upgrades.

Is 80 Plus Gold worth it over Bronze?

Gold wastes less power as heat and is usually quieter. On this page, a Gold unit starts at £79.99.

What is 12V-2x6?

It's the power plug newer graphics cards use. An ATX 3.1 PSU with a native cable avoids adapters.

Modular or fully wired?

Modular lets you fit only the cables you need, which is tidier. Fully wired is usually cheaper.
