What to look for

  • DDR5 or DDR4?: They don't swap. Newer platforms such as AMD AM5 and recent Intel boards take DDR5. Older boards take DDR4. Check your motherboard's spec page first.
  • Speed and latency: For DDR5, 6000 MT/s is a common sweet spot. A lower CAS latency (CL) number is slightly quicker at the same speed.
  • Buy a matched kit: Two sticks (2x8GB or 2x16GB) run in dual channel. Mixing old and new sticks is a common cause of boot problems.
  • How much?: 16GB covers most gaming. 32GB helps if you stream, edit or run lots of apps at once. Check Task Manager before you spend.
  • XMP and EXPO: These profiles let the kit run at its rated speed. Turn them on in the BIOS after you fit the RAM.

Questions people ask

Can I put DDR5 in a DDR4 motherboard?

No. DDR5 and DDR4 don't swap. Check your motherboard's spec page to see which it takes.

Is 16GB enough for gaming?

16GB covers most gaming. 32GB helps if you stream, edit video or run lots of apps at once.

Why isn't my RAM running at its rated speed?

Turn on XMP or EXPO in the BIOS after fitting it. Without it, most kits run at a slower default speed.

Should I add sticks to my existing RAM?

A matched kit is safer. Mixing old and new sticks is a common cause of boot problems.
